Hyde et al. consider that a "communicative language teaching" approach is required when teaching English as an additional language. On page 53, the competencies that the teacher is trying to develop are listed.

The statement about 'children voting with their feet' is so true... Especially in remote communities where compulsory school attendance may not be enforced, if children are not engaged then it is my experience that they will simply not attend. Fascinating clip.
ReplyDeleteI thought the video is pretty relevant and I think regardless of where we are, we need to engage students. Especially if it is something that is perceived by students to be difficult, such as learning English. I think it is also an excellent strategy on the teacher's behalf to present himself as a 'learner' by learning the local language and using it in front of his students.
